Exercise for Parkinson's

Exercise has been considered as one of the treatment for Parkinson's disease for 50 years1.

Recent literature also agree physical exercise is beneficial for improving function, gait, balance, and strength in patients with Parkinson's disease2,3,4.

Type of exercises good for Parkinson’s

Studies have shown that patients with mild to moderate Parkinson's disease using a treadmill three times per week for 40 minutes under supervision observed significant improvements in lower-extremity tasks, such as walking, balance, agility, and peak oxygen uptake and increasing calorie expenditure5.

Another study found resistance training can increase patients' strength, muscle mass and bone density, and is very beneficial for Parkinson’s6.

Structured exercising training more effective

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) has published multiple recommendations for Parkinson's disease exercise, including aerobic and weight-bearing exercise under supervision7.

Exercise can effectively enhance treatment of Parkinson's disease. In addition to preventing illness and maintaining physical health, mental health was also seen to improve8.
